Two faced January

Preface: According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the month of January was “named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other with the ability to see into the future.” This month, I offer an ode to January.

Two faced January…

Looking back at suns and skies,

Moons and star lit paths

Trodden in mirth and fear,

Lament … grief…

Relief…

bringing us now to this liminal/ threshold? space.

You breathe warm anticipation on the backs of our necks…

Two-faced January…

A turning

toward the winter sun…

A longing for clean, crisp pages of renewal.

The fragrance of fresh paint,

eager to adorn the blank canvas…

Painted with memories…

Painting the soles of our feet

As we walk…
